[THE INVESTOR] LG Chem, South Korea’s top chemical firm, said on Dec. 26 that it would invest 300 billion won (US$278 million) for the expansion of a plant in the southern part of the country.

The expansion -- set to be completed by the first half of 2019 in Yeosu, South Jeolla Province -- will boost the annual production capacity of crude acrylic acid and super absorbent polymer to 700,000 and 500,000 metric tons, respectively, according to LG Chem.

CAA is used in paint and adhesives, while SAP is used as a raw material in diapers.

Yeosu is a key industrial city located about 455 kilometers south of Seoul
