[THE INVESTOR] LG Electronics said on Jan. 8 that it has inked a partnership with US chipmaker NXP and German automobile software firm Hella Aglaia to develop advanced driver assistance system solutions, a key feature in automated vehicles.

The Korean electronics giant said it will be in charge of producing cameras and algorithms that help detect obstacles in the driving environment, while the US chipmaker will roll out image-processing processors and the German partner develops ADAS software.

LG said that the latest partnership will provide global self-driving car manufacturers with solutions that meet stricter safety standards expected to be implemented in the global autonomous car market by 2020.

The self-driving car solutions, which the three partners aim to commercialize in the next two years, will satisfy the Euro New Car Assessment Program 2020. The safety regulations, among other rules, require autonomous cars to drive safely through an intersection without a crash, LG explained.

“The three companies will be able to lead the global autonomous car parts sector through the latest partnership to develop the integrated ADAS solutions,” said Lee Woo-jong, chief of LG’s vehicle component division.

In December last year, the electronics giant also announced that it would work with mapping provider HERE Technologies to develop telematics solutions for autonomous vehicles, which will offer vehicle safety and entertainment services for users.
