[THE INVESTOR] Boston-based asset management firm State Street Global Advisors on Jan. 9 said it has appointed Um Tae-jong as the head of its new operations in Korea.

Um, who formerly headed Morgan Stanley Capital International’s operation in Korea, will lead SSGA’s business strategy and future development here as it make inroads into the market. SSGA, investment management arm of State Street Corporation, is the world’s third largest asset manager with around US$2.8 trillion assets under management.

He will be reporting to June Wong, SSGA head of Asia ex-Japan.

“Dr. Um brings immense value to our business given his strong and investment and technical background, as well as his experience in strategic business management,” said Wong.

“His exceptionally strong relationships with pension funds, central banks and sovereign wealth funds will also enhance SSGA’s ability to offer more value-added services to our clients. He will be instrumental in driving our strategic initiatives as we grow our business in Korea.”

Prior to his most recent leadership at MSCI Korea, he was chief investment officer for global investment at Samsung Asset Management, and head of the international investment division at Samsung Fire and Marine.  Previously, he served as head of investment at Continuum Management in New York.

Um received a BA in economics from Seoul National University and a PhD in economics from Cornell University.
