[THE INVESTOR] The number of Koreans who have signed an online petition to stop the government’s planned cryptocurrency regulations has crossed the 200,000-mark, on Jan. 16.

The online petition was posted on the website of Cheong Wa Dae on Dec. 28 after the government announced that it is mulling stringent measures to keep a short leash on the heated cryptocurrency market here.

When the number of participants in the online petition surpasses 200,000 within 30 days, the government is required to formally respond.

“We are not fools. People choose to invest in cryptocurrencies based on their own research, and because they think the cryptocurrencies could become the next industrial revolution,” reads the petition headliner.

The petition against cryptocurrency regulations has become the seventh petition that will receive an official response from the presidential office, including those on lifting the country’s ban on abortions and a law revision calling for stringent punishment for juvenile delinquents.
