[THE INVESTOR] Samsung Electronics said on Jan. 18 it started the mass production of the industry‘s first and fastest 16-gigabit Graphics Double Data Rate 6 chips.

The GDDR6 offers twice the speed and density levels of the company’s previous GDDR5 model, and can be used in advanced graphics processing for gaming devices as well as artificial intelligence, the company said.

The new model is built on Samsung’s advanced 10-nanometer class process technology, which marks another breakthrough after the tech giant adopted the first-generation technology in February 2016.

The new solution also boasts data transfers of 72 Gbs per second, which represents a more than two-fold increase over the previous GDDR5, the company said.

The world‘s No. 1 computer chip and smartphone manufacturer said the GDDR6 offers 35 percent less energy consumption compared to the widely used GDDR5.

“By producing this 10-nanometer graphic DRAMs, we will strengthen our presence in the gaming and graphics card markets and accommodate the growing need for advanced graphics memory,” said a company official who asked not to be named
