[THE INVESTOR] Mercedes-Benz Korea, the No. 1 importer of automobiles in Korea, announced that it aims to sell 70,000 units this year, during a press conference at Hotel Shilla in Seoul on Jan. 22.

The German carmaker’s sales in Korea grew 22.2 percent, selling 68,861 cars in 2017. The growth was largely due to its new E-class model, which sold more than 30,000 units.

“It will not be easy to maintain the growth curve, which is beyond our expectations for the past two years,” said Mercedes-Benz Korea CEO Dimitris Psillakis. “However, we will continue to work on realizing our future mobility vision.”

To maintain its title as a top import carmaker here, the company will introduce 20 models, including nine new ones and 11 face-lifted vehicles in 2018. Mercedes-Benz plans to first roll out its electric vehicle EQ during the first half of this year.

Mercedes Benz also aims to focus on improving its services.

“We plan to establish five more service centers this year,” said Kim Ji-sub, vice president of services and parts. The company also plans to inject around 35 billion won (US$32.71 million) of new funds and hire 50 more employees to expand its auto parts distribution centers in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province.

The Mercedes-Benz CEO also highlighted plans to strengthen its strategic alliance with local partners such as KT, Samsung Card and Samsung C&T to provide “better and differentiated services” to customers this year.
