[ET NEWS] Samsung Electronics is launching a new chip for cars, tentatively called Exynos Auto, with aims to supply the chip first to Audi that has used chips mostly from Qualcomm, industry sources said on Feb. 5.

The new chip is expected to become Samsung’s first system-on-a-chip that is exclusively designed to bring a massive amount of computing power to in-car solutions like infotainment system, digital dashboard and head-up display.

Samsung’s system LSI division plans to complete the mass-production system as early as within this year.

This is not the first time that Samsung, the world’s largest memory chip maker, has produced automotive chips. It supplied chips to Audi first in January last year by revising its existing processors for smartphones.

“Samsung started developing automotive chips since its partnership with Audi in 2015,” an industry source said on condition of anonymity. “The new chip will be developed exclusively for cars.”

Sources said the Exynos Auto will improve processing speed and efficiency by itself using artificial intelligence technology. An LTE supporting device will be added to support internet connectivity while driving.
