[THE INVESTOR] Korea’s top mobile carrier SK Telecom said on Feb. 21 that it will launch an automobile black box using the latest LTE technology for the Internet of Things.

IoT tech, which allows everyday appliances to link to the internet, is seen as a major technological development and a new revenue source for telecommunication firms.

The IoT Black Box is a machine installed inside an automobile and designed to record speed and direction by utilizing the company’s IoT-based LTE communication network Cat M1.

LTE Cat M1, one of the LTE standards first developed in 2016, is a low-power interface that lets a user connect to IoT devices with a medium data rate, SK Telecom said.

Users will be able to check video images recorded through the IoT Black Box with their smartphone, as well as check car alarms in real time, the company said.

SK Telecom said it will complete the national network for the LTE Cat-M1 by the end of February and begin commercial operations in April.

LTE Cat-M1 -- whose cost-effective communications modules lower the manufacturing costs of IoT devices -- is also expected to help broaden the use of IoT applications, which require the transmission of mid and high volume data, such as voice and images, SK Telecom said.
