[THE INVESTOR] Korean retail giant Lotte said on March 19 it will use artificial intelligence to review cover letters to find best candidates for its job positions as part of its efforts to boost accuracy and fairness in the hiring process.

The system will be partly adopted for the recruitment of some of Lotte affiliates, according to Lotte Corp., the conglomerate’s holding company. The business group plans to hire some 800 entry-level employees for about 40 of its subsidiaries this month and recruit another 350 summer interns in May.

Lotte said the results of the AI system’s review will be taken into account as a reference, with their human resources officials also evaluating the documents in the original method.

“The AI system will provide help in selecting the best fit for the positions,” a Lotte official said. “We expect the technology to help us thoroughly review all the cover letters and find outstanding candidates,” a Lotte official said.

It marks Lotte’s first major recruitment since February, when the group launched an emergency management committee to handle key decision-making issues after Chairman Shin Dong-bin was jailed for a bribery scandal.
