[THE INVESTOR] LG Electronics said on March 26 its accumulated production of inverter direct drive motors for washing machines has reached 70 million units since it was first introduced in 1998.

The Korean tech giant claims the DD motor can significantly reduce noise and vibration of washers by connecting the motor and container directly, which also leads to better durability and energy efficiency.

LG said half of the production volume came from its line in Changwon, 398 kilometers south of Seoul. The annual production reached the 1-million mark in 2005, with the number growing sharply to hit a whopping 8 million units in 2017 alone.

The company added that the length of wires used in the 70 million motors is equal to the distance of 22 round trips from the Earth to the moon.

The company said its inverter DD motors are certified from credible organizations around the globe, including the Verband Deutscher Elektrotechniker of Germany.

LG said its capability of producing the motor wholly by itself led the market to favor its products for more than 20 years. The tech firm said its continuous research allowed it to produce what it calls its fourth-generation inverter DD motor, the production of which costs only a quarter of that of the first model showcased in 1998.

Such efforts to cut costs also helped the company to manufacture premium inverter DD motors as well, it added.
