Kakao, Naver invest W1.5b in smart home startup Brunt

[THE INVESTOR] Korean smart home startup Brunt on March 26 said it has received 1.5 billion won (US$1.39 million) in seed investment from Naver and Kakao Ventures, venture capital arm of the messenger giant -- formerly known as K Cube Ventures. 

Brunt, established in 2016 by Nam Chan-woo, develops Internet of Things-based smart home software and hardware. Its key products include automatic window blinds, electric outlets, air purifier and a mobile app that controls all the devices. 




“Brunt’s product features design and usability in addition to technology, providing new experiences to consumers in daily life,” said Lee Jung-an, head of investment at Naver. 

“The smart home industry has become popular due to the recent entry by many startups and large companies. But when considering price and design, consumers are still limited from choice offerings,” said Jun Kim, partner at Kakao Ventures. “We decided to invest in Brunt for its strategy that identified these kind of demands earlier will accelerate the future of smart home industry.”

With the latest funding, Brunt plans to market its product to raise consumer awareness of the brand, as well as expand services globally. Brunt said it is in the process of raising a Series A round of funding.
