[ET NEWS] LG Electronics and Sony are expected to rule the OLED TV sector this year as the pair will be receiving most of LG Display’s panel supplies, according to industry sources on April 4.

LG Display -- the only real manufacturer of large OLED TV panels -- shipped panels for about 1.7 million TVs in 2017. This year it aims to raise production by 65 percent on-year to 2.8 million units, most of which are to be supplied to LG Electronics and Sony. 

Of last year’s amount, the two TV makers had secured 1.2 million and 200,000 units, respectively, while Panasonic and China’s Skyworth secured 100,000 units each.

LG and Sony plan to secure an additional 500,000 and 300,000 units this year, sweeping the increased panel supplies.

China’s Hisense is scheduled to debut its first OLED TV using the LG panels this year but the shipment will be less than 100,000 units. Other TV makers such as Skyworth and Philips are also seeking to launch their own OLED models but are struggling to secure the panel supplies. 

“Several Chinese TV brands are increasingly launching OLED TVs but their actual shipments are extremely limited due to scarce panel supplies as well as their weaker brand power compared to LG and Sony,” an industry source told ET News on condition of anonymity.
