[THE INVESTOR] Kakao Mobility, a Korean firm that provides cab-hailing and driver-for-hire services, said on April 10 it has added an artificial intelligence functions to its ride-hailing operation.

The AI-based “smart call” was added to Korea’s most popular cab-hailing app Kakao Taxi so that a user can request a driver to come to a certain destination using a smartphone.

The company said it has accumulated three years worth of data on customers’ calls and uses big data to increase both speed and accuracy.

The company will charge 1000 won (US$1) for the service, Kakao Mobility said.

“Kakao Mobility will increase the benefits of both users and taxi drivers by adding various functions and policies and creating new opportunities at the same time,” CEO John Jung said in a press release.

Kakao Taxi has some 18 million subscribers in South Korea, equal to 35 percent of the country’s population. The company also has some 96 percent of taxis in the country as partners.

Kakao Mobility was spun off from Kakao Corp., the operator of Korea‘s most-used messenger KakaoTalk, last year and operates as a separate entity.
