[THE INVESTOR] E-commerce giant eBay Korea confirmed on April 19 that it has handed out dividends worth 287.3 billion won (US$270.27 million) over the last two years to its headquarters in the US.

The firm doled out 161.3 billion won in 2016 and around 126 billion won the following year through eBay UK, which fully owns the Korean unit.

“Over the last 17 years, we have not handed out any dividends to our shareholders,” eBay Korea spokesperson Hong Yoon-hee told The Investor. “Many e-commerce operator like Amazon are currently investing in research and development sector and we are also trying to do the same with the dividends sent to our headquarters.”

Although eBay Korea’s operating profit decreased 6.9 percent to 62.32 billion won in 2017, although its sales increased by 10.1 percent to 951.9 billion won, it is the only e-commerce operator here posting a profit. Its local rivals, including Coupang, Ticket Monster and WeMakePrice all posted an operating loss last year.
