[THE INVESTOR] Samsung Display said on April 20 it has filed an administrative litigation against a regional labor office in protest of the government’s decision to have its sensitive workplace reports opened to the public.

The display maker took the legal step against the government‘s labor office in Cheonan to the Daejeon District Court in central Korea on April 17, a month after the office ordered the company to disclose its workplace reports on its facility in Asan.

Asan, some 100 kilometers south of Seoul, is close to Cheonan.

The legal battle came as a female former Samsung Display worker, who she said is suffering from lymphoma after working at the factory for three years, demanded the reports be made public so that the information can be used as part of an industrial accident claim.

Still, Samsung Display has rejected her demand, claiming that the reports contain sensitive technologies that can be taken advantage of by its rivals.

“Should such information get into the hands of rivals, our competitiveness may be violated,” a Samsung Display official said, without elaborating.

Last month, the Ministry of Employment and Labor office in Cheonan ordered that Samsung Display should publicly disclose the workplace reports of 2007 and 2008.

Samsung Display has also asked the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy to review whether the contents of its reports can be considered the so-called “core” technologies for the country’s industry.

Samsung Electronics, the parent firm of Samsung Display, has also filed a similar administrative litigation and taken other legal steps.
