[THE INVESTOR] Samsung Electronics said on April 25 it will start mass production of a new DRAM chip designed to withstand extreme temperatures and optimized for automobiles.
The Korean tech giant said it decided to start the mass production of the 10-nano level 16Gb LPDDR4X DRAM. Compared with the previous 20-nano level 8Gb LPDDR4 DRAM automotive chips, the new product can operate with no issues from minus 40 degrees to plus 125 degrees Celsius. At the high end, the new chip can run at temperatures 20 degrees higher than before.
Samsung said the superior performance gave it a Autograde 1, a first for the demanding industry.
The new DRAM chip boasts the industry’s top data processing speed of 4,266 megabits per second, which is 14 percent faster than the previous generation products.
With power efficiency also improving 30 percent, Samsung said it hopes the solution will be applied to self-driving systems of major global carmakers.
