[THE INVESTOR] GM Korea said on May 2 its April sales fell 22 percent from a year earlier due to weaker domestic demand.

GM Korea sold 38,575 vehicles last month, down from 49,163 units a year earlier, mainly because of a sharp decline in local sales, the company said in a statement.

Domestic sales plunged 54 percent to 5,378 units last month from 11,751 a year ago. Exports declined 11 percent to 33,197 units from 37,412 during the same period, it said.

The sales slump was mainly affected by weaker local demand for the Cruze subcompact and midsize Malibu sedans, the statement said.

In the January-April period, however, GM Korea saw its combined sales rise 4.9 percent on-year to 201,559 vehicles from 192,221 a year earlier on help from exports, it said.
