[THE INVESTOR] Samsung Electronics said on May 3 it has released a new 16-megapixel image sensor that is expected to help smartphone producers significantly reduce development time.

The Korean tech giant said it released the ISOCELL Slim 3P9 image sensor, which will has been built to allow today’s sleekly designed smartphones to take “bright and vivid” pictures.

“Since the optimization and reliability tests are done beforehand at the module-level rather than on the sensor alone, manufacturers can simply plug the camera module onto their handsets, saving up to four months in terms of development time,” the company said.

“For faster auto-focusing, the 3P9 adopted an advanced phase detection auto-focus  with doubled the autofocus agent density compared to conventional PDAF sensors,” it added.

The sensor is also capable of providing smartphones with in-body stabilization that can counteract the shaking of hands or other movements of the shooter, Samsung said.
