[THE INVESTOR] Posco Magnesium Alloy Coating, or PosMAC, is a highly corrosion-resistant steel that is five to 10 times more resistant than standard galvanized steel. It is also more cost-effective, benefiting both manufacturers and consumers. With it, Korea’s largest steelmaker POSCO is leading the related markets, according to industry sources.

Among its wide applications, PosMAC is especially popular as the material used in solar panel structures, which makes up more than half of the total sales of the product. It is important for solar energy structures to be built with corrosion-resistant materials as they are exposed outdoors for long hours.

The sales of PosMAC for solar panels has doubled each year since its debut in 2013. Buoyed by the success, the total sales of PosMAC tripled last year in comparison to 2015.

POSCOS’s steel product is receiving a great deal of attention in the overseas market as well. In May, it participated in Mexico’s largest renewable energy event MIREC WEEK 2018 for the first time. At the convention, the steelmaker’s display of solar energy projects applying PosMAC steels, gained attention from solar facility contractors around the world.

PosMAC is also an important part of the steelmaker’s corporate social responsibility initiatives, including its “Steel House” project, building houses for families in need using PosMAC for both internal and external materials for long-term durability.

Posco’s Yoewa Steel Bridge in Yangon, Myanmar

Last year, POSCO replaced an old wooden bridge with a steel bridge in Yeowa Village in Yangon, Myanmar, securing safer commute for children and enhanced transportation for residents that gave a boost to the village’s economy. The steel frame of the 2.5 meter wide and 20 meter bridge used PosMAC manufactured at the Pohang plant.

At the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, PosMAC was used in major facilities for the global sporting event, including the International Broadcasting Center, the 300-room media residence hotel and Kwandong Hockey Center.

POSCO is also seeking to expand the use of PosMAC in electronic appliances, beyond its current usage in outdoor units of air conditioners and cable trays for electrical wiring of the building.

On the back of PosMAC’s strong performance, the steel giant seeks to double sales by 2020 to expand its market share in the global market.
