[THE INVESTOR] The number of mergers and acquisitions among Korean companies rose 22 percent in the first half of 2018 from the previous year, data showed on July 17.

A total of 23 companies listed on the country’s main KOSPI and 27 entities on the tech-laden KOSDAQ market either completed or were in the process of business takeovers in the first half of the year, compared to 41 such firms during the same period last year, according to the Korea Securities Depository.

Accordingly, their aggregated payment to shareholders to exercise appraisal rights spiked eight times on-year to 741.6 billion won (US$658.80 million) during the first six months of the year, the KSD said.

Major cases include Lotte Corp., which merged its affiliates, and the marriage between CJ E&M and CJ O Shopping.
