[THE INVESTOR] CJ Foodville announced on July 24 that it has started providing Kakao Pay service at its seven brand stores, including restaurant chains VIPS, The Place and bakery chain Tous Les Jours.

The company said that it adopted the new system after seeing the number of people paying through Kakao Pay increase dramatically. “We wanted to also make offline payments convenient by installing Kakao’s payment system at our outlets,” a company official said in a statement. “We will continue to provide more diverse services as a restaurant chain operator by cooperating with Kakao Pay.”

Currently over 180 stores directly operated by CJ Foodville have installed the system, through which customers can make payments by simply scanning a dedicated barcode on KakaoTalk, following which the transaction is completed by connecting with users’ Kakao Bank accounts.

Furthermore, at Namsan Seoul Tower and Busan Tower outlets, which are popular among tourists, customers can also use the system to buy souvenirs.

Kakao Pay was launched in 2014. The parent firm announced in April that transactions reached 1.3 trillion won (US$1.14 billion) a month earlier.
