[THE INVESTOR] Samsung Electronics said on Aug. 16 it has developed the industry’s first 5G network modem that fully complies with the latest 3GPP standards.

The Korean tech giant said its Exynos Modem 5100 delivers a maximum download speed of up to 2-Gbps under the 5G network's sub-6-GHz settings, approximately 1.7 times faster than the previous 4G solution.

It also boasts 6Gbps speed in millimeter wave spectrum settings, indicating that it can download a 3.7-GB full HD movie in five seconds.

The 3GPP is an international organization for standards of mobile communication. Samsung said the modem is compatible with the 3GPP Release 15, the most up-to-date specification for 5G New Radio standard.

“Samsung successfully conducted an over-the-air 5G-NR data call test under a wireless environment utilizing a 5G base station and 5G end-user equipment prototype embedded with Exynos Modem 5100,” it said, claiming it has secured a core technology for the commercialization of 5G services.

Samsung added the new modem also consumes less energy as it is built on 10-nanometer process technology.
