[THE INVESTOR] Korean shares on Aug. 21 ended higher as foreigners turned net buyers of large-cap stocks amid worries over trade friction between the United States and China. The won rose against the US dollar.

The benchmark KOSPI gained 22.18 points, or 0.99 percent, to close at 2,270.06. Trading volume was moderately light at 290.5 million shares worth 5.093 trillion won (US$4.60 billion), with gainers outnumbering decliners 523 to 293.

Foreigners bought a net 106.7 billion won worth of stocks. But institutions and individuals sold a combined 168.6 billion won of stocks.

The Korean currency closed at 1,118.40 won against the US dollar, up 4.70 won from the previous trading session.
