[THE INVESTOR] Samsung Electronics on Aug. 29 introduced a new portable solid-state drive, the Samsung Portable SSD X5, which boasts improved speed that can transfer a 20 gigabyte file in 12 seconds.

“The X5 is yet another testament to Samsung’s commitment to providing innovative portable storage solutions that enable faster transfer of large data files, saving users’ valuable time,” the company said.

Samsung said the new SSDs utilize the NVM Express and Thunderbolt 3 interfaces, which makes the product up to four times faster than the USB 3.1. Such features make the X5 suitable for handling large files for professionals, it added.

The product will be released in three versions, with the biggest boasting a storage size of 2 terabytes. Other models come with 1 TB and 500 GB capacities.

The SSDs boast a sequential read speed of up to 2,800 MB per second, with the writing speed also reaching up to 2,300 MB per second. The 500 GB edition, however, will have a maximum write speed of 2,100 MB per second.

The company said the speed is 25.5 times faster than Samsung’s previous external hard disk drive.

Samsung said it will provide a three-year warranty for the new products, which will hit the market on Sept. 3. The products will be released in 50 countries, including Korea, Germany and the United States.

The 2 TB edition will come with a price tag of US$1,399, with that for the 1 TB version set at US$699. The 500 GB version is more affordable at US$399.
