[THE INVESTOR] The number of subscribers to IPTV services surpassed that of cable channels for the first time during the first half of this year, government data showed on Nov. 21.

The subscribers of IPTV services offered by Korea’s mobile carriers and fixed-line internet operators came to 14.71 million, compared with 13.98 million subscribers to cable channels, during the January-June period, data by the Ministry of Science and ICT showed.

Korea’s IPTV subscriptions have been on the rise since the launch of the service in 2008, growing to 3.66 million in 2010 and 6.54 million in 2012, and piercing the 10 million mark in 2014.

The ministry attributed the growth to aggressive marketing by the mobile carriers and operators, as well as various services.

KT, Korea’s leading wireless and fixed-line services provider, had an average of 6.6 million monthly subscribers, trailed by SK Broadband with 4.46 million and CJ Hello with 4.16 million, during the cited period.
