[THE INVESTOR] Samsung Electronics said on Jan. 29 it has developed an advanced display driver IC capable of delivering high-quality resolution in premium 8K TVs.

The world’s largest chipmaker said the new DDI boasts an “industry-leading” intra-panel data transfer speed at up to 4 Gbps.

The new display driver adopts the company’s Unified Standard Interface for TV 2.0 that doubles the previous USI-T 1.03’s speed of 2 Gbps.

The higher data transfer capabilities enhance the performance of displays and will be fitted on slim TVs that are 65 inches and above, the company said.

Given that 8K resolution has four times the number of pixels of 4K UHD, Samsung said the amount of image data that transfers within the panel increases accordingly, which requires high-functioning display drivers.

“To deliver true 8K resolution, it is essential for today’s DDIs to support a high-speed 4 Gbps intra-panel interface,” Hur Ben K., senior vice president of System LSI marketing, said in a release.
