Chipmaker SK hynix said on Feb. 19 that it has achieved “Zero Waste to Landfill” certifications, making it the first Korean company to secure this validation.

The U.S.-based waste diversion certification company UL carries out a certification program every year, with three levels of recognition, depending on each company’s commitment to reducing industrial waste.

Companies that achieve a waste diversion rate of 100 percent qualify for platinum level. Those with 98 percent or greater qualify for gold, while those that achieve a diversion rate of 80 percent or greater qualify for silver.

SK hynix said it achieved silver status after recording 90-percent and 94-percent levels at its production lines in Icheon and Chungju, respectively.

“Our efforts to minimize environmental fallouts have been recognized with the achievement of this certification as the 14th company in the world,” a company representative said.

The validation program monitors and measures material flows in and out of facilities to provide a basis for landfill diversion rate so that consumers can more accurately assess claims and make meaningful comparisons about a company’s commitment to environmental protection and clean, sustainable growth.
