Korea’s main bourse closed lower on March 5 as investors remain cautious over a possible trade deal between the United States and China, analysts said. The local currency weakened against the greenback.

The benchmark KOSPI shed 11.43 points, or 0.52 percent, to finish at 2,179.23. Trading volume was slim at 308.8 million shares worth 4.91 trillion won (US$4.36 billion), with losers outnumbering gainers 425 to 395.

The index opened lower following Wall Street losses and fell further to extend its losing session for a third straight session.

Foreign and institutional investors sold off a net 38.5 billion won and 21.6 billion won worth of local shares, respectively, while individuals picked up shares worth 74.4 billion won.

The local currency closed at 1,125.50 won against the US dollar, down 0.60 won from previous session.
