From smart farming to three-wheeled electric vehicles, cutting-edge technologies of South Korean companies are in the limelight at the ASEAN-ROK Innovation Showcase 2019, being held on the sidelines of the 2019 ASEAN-Republic of Korea Commemorative Summit in Busan.

Korean firms -- conglomerates as well as small and midsized companies -- including Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, KT, Sherpa Space, Vuno, Telstar-hommel and Ulalalab, showcased their products and services.

Telecom giant KT, which is eyeing global markets, deployed autonomous security vehicles on Nov. 26 to target potential partners from five Asian nations -- Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The self-driving cars running on the 5G network were patrolling around Bexco, the convention center serving as the main venue of the conference.

The vehicle, named HR-Sherpa, can drive by itself or be remotely controlled to get to designated destinations. It can also autonomously drive side by side with security personnel. It has been produced in collaboration with armored vehicle manufacturer Hyundai Rotem.

“Showcasing the 5G-powered autonomous vehicles for Asian leaders is meaningful for the firm,” said Choi Kang-rim, head of KT’s connected car business center, adding the telecom firm will make further effort to advance autonomous driving technology and meet demand from military and industrial sectors.

An industrial robot that cuts metals with laser, made by industrial machine maker Telstar-Hommel, also made an impression at the tech exhibition. The robotic arm, running on the 5G network, moved simultaneously with the same machine being deployed at an actual manufacturing factory.

Tech giants Samsung and LG displayed their respective electronic products, including high-end TVs, fridges, and mobile devices.

Samsung Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong, along with chiefs of other conglomerates, including SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won and Hyundai Motor Group Vice Chairman Chung Euisun, participated in a dinner meeting on Nov. 25 with Asian leaders from five nations to seek future partnership.

The exhibition also featured smart farming technologies. LS Emtron displayed tractors equipped with light-emitting diode headlamps for night work, a smart key system and a 10.1-inch touchscreen for multimedia services.

“I hope the conference leads to collaborative works between the company and potential partners in the Asian nations,” said Kim Yeon-soo, CEO of LSIS.

Meanwhile, Automaker Renault Samsung presented its vision of the future mobility industry with its ultracompact electric vehicle Twizy for Asian nations which face challenges related to air pollution, crowded roads and shortage of parking space. The EV model has been manufactured at the firm’s Busan complex since October.
