Asia Film Lab announced on Jan. 27 that it is inviting Korean applicants for a Masterclass Film Workshop by Hollywood choreography and movement director Francesca Jaynes, scheduled to be held in Seoul over Feb. 5-9.

This is to be AFL’s first Masterclass Film Workshop in Asia. Since 2014, AFL has been running one of Korea’s biggest feature film workshops, designed to discover local talents in filmmaking and performing or acting.

Korean applicants residing in Korea can apply via a page run by AFL partner firm Aroundus by Feb. 2. Aroundus is a Korean information technology startup and service provider running a social job board platform for freelance talent in content and media entertainment industries.

British choreographer Jaynes has participated in over 50 commercial films, including Marvel film “Black Widow,” starring Scarlett Johansson and to be released in May. In 2016, Jaynes took part in “Allied,” starring Brad Pitt, and “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” Her filmography also includes “Gravity,” starring Sandra Bullock, and Steven Spielberg’s “Artificial Intelligence.”

Jaynes has worked with world-class directors across film, television and theater including Tim Burton, Robert Zemeckis, Joss Whedon, Andy Serkis and Alfonso Cuaron.

“Our primary goal is to contribute to the development of Korea and Asia’s content industries by learning from world-class experts,” said AFL President Lee Jung-sub, who is also a film director. “We also hope to discover local talent in filmmaking and performing or acting.”

The workshops are tailored after the Masterclass Film Workshop programs run by Portugal-based FEST Film Lab. In November 2019, AFL signed on with the FFL to start the programs in Asia, starting with Seoul.

FFL is well-known for hosting filmmaking workshops with world-class film and content industry experts across Europe and the US. It collaborated with high-profile figures such as Peter Webber, Colin Arthur, Laurence Bennett, David Macmillan, Tariq Anwar and Philip Bloom.

The workshop in Seoul will consist of two sessions, with the first beginning on Feb. 5, and the second on Feb. 8. It is priced at 685,000 won ($584) per person for both sessions. Each class is to be limited to a maximum 30 people.

AFL will offer two free admission tickets – one filmmaker and one actor or performer. Winners will be announced on Feb. 3 via AFL’s website and the Aroundus application site. Official applications for the event will close a day earlier on Feb. 2.

This time, the workshop will be open to Korean nationals only, but AFL plans to open up applications to filmmakers, actors and performers across the Asia-Pacific region for follow-up workshops to be organized later this year.

Collaboration is expected with award-winning film industry experts including Scottish cinematographer Michael Coulter, known for his work in “The Bank Job,” “Love Actually,” and “Notting Hill,” along with Oscar-winning British editor Chris Dickens, who edited 2012’s “Les Miserables” and “Slumdog Millionaire.”

British Academy winning cinematographer Barry Ackroyd, known for “Jason Bourne” and “Captain Phillips,” is also to be featured in the workshop, along with 1993 Academy Award-winning Polish production designer and set decorator Allan Starski, known for his work on “Schindler’s List.”
