[THE INVESTOR] Pharmaceutical giant ChongKunDang Chairman Rhee Jang-han is facing flak for verbally abusing employees after an audio recording showing him berating a driver was made public on July 13.

“I don’t understand how an idiot like you was been hired. I don’t know what your father does for a living but your parents should be ashamed of how inept you are,” Rhee is heard telling his driver.

The chairman also forced the driver to disregard road safety rules in order to hurry to his destination by instructing him to ignore red lights and drive in the bus lanes. In addition, the driver reiterated that he overheard Rhee frequently lashing out at other employees.

In response to audio recordings, Rhee made a public apology on July 14 stating, “I deeply regret all of my wrongdoings and will take full responsibility.”

He did not take any further questions and vowed that he would take time to reflect on the matter without stating any specifics.

In wake of the news, ChongKunDang’s stocks opened lower at 116,000 won (US$102.18) on July 14, down 2.52 percent from the previous session. The stock continued to drop through the day despite his apology as they were trading at 115,500 won as of 1:20 p.m.
