[THE INVESTOR] SK Telecom CTO Choi Jin-sung is set to join Deutsche Telecom, the largest telecom company in Europe, to push its advances in 5G network development, according to news reports on Aug. 1.

Choi offered his resignation last month and is scheduled to join the German telco as vice president on Aug. 17. SK Telecom CEO Park Jung-ho is said to have tried hard to dissuade him from leaving.

“I’ll try to serve as a bridge between SK Telecom and Deutsche Telekom that have maintained an extensive partnership in developing technology and new businesses since 2015,” he told local media on July 31.

Deutsche Telekom Chairman and CEO Timotheus Höttges is said to have personally offered him the job.

“Following his vist to Korea twice since 2015, the Deutsche Telecom CEO has evinced keen interest in LTE and 5G network services and artificial intelligence solutions developed by SK Telecom,” he added.

Choi graduated in electric engineering from the University of Southern California and worked at GoldStar Semiconductor and LG Electronics’ mobile communications division before joining SK Telecom in 2012. He led the firm’s network IT convergence research center since 2015, playing a core role in launching more advanced LTE-A network services and developing other virtual network and cloud system technologies.
