[THE INVESTOR] The US-based unit of LG Electronics said on May 3 the latest LG G7 ThinQ smartphone is expected to help revitalize the company’s struggling handset business.

“We need to seek a turnaround in the smartphone segment in the North American market,” said Cho Ju-wan, who heads the Korean tech giant’s US unit. “As the V30 smartphone brought a sensation in the market and created the momentum, we seek to post a turnaround in performance with the G7 ThinQ.”

LG showcased the launch event of the new flagship G smartphone in the US for the first time in three years. The previous G5 and G6 smartphones were unveiled in Spain.

The G7 smartphone sports a 6.1-inch “Super Bright Display” screen with a whopping brightness of 1,000 nits, a measure that refers to one candela per square meter. A higher figure indicates a brighter display. LG said the average smartphone on the market today has a brightness of 500 to 600 nits.

The smartphone also comes with what LG calls a “New Second Screen” at the top of the display, which is similar to the notch design found on the US tech giant Apple’s iPhone X.

As for the camera, the LG G7 ThinQ features a main shooter with dual lenses, both using 16-megapixel sensors, along with an 8-megapixel selfie camera. The dual system is comprised of a zoom and wide-angle lens setup.

Cho highlighted that it is significant that the latest smartphone came with the title “ThinQ,” which is the brand for LG’s artificial intelligence technology.
