Samsung Electronics announced on Nov. 9 that it had conducted a joint field test of the fifth-generation mobile network with China Mobile.
The 5G technology aims to offer data transmission speeds about 100 times faster than the current fourth-generation wireless networks.
The field test was conducted in Beijing, using two wireless spectrum bands, 28 GHz and 3.5 GHz, Samsung said.
The 28 GHz wireless spectrum offers faster speed but requires telecom operators to build more base stations.
The 3.5 GHz band features wider frequency coverage, but its speed is slower than the 28 GHz band, experts said.
Jang Dae-koon, an executive of Samsung’s research unit in Beijing, said in a statement that the company aims to play a leading role in developing a 5G standard by strengthening cooperation with Chinese firms.
