[THE INVESTOR] InssTek, a South Korean 3-D printing firm headed by Sun Doo-hoon, Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Chung Mong-koo's son-in-law, on Nov. 24 clinched a deal with a Russian university to export its metal 3-D printers.
Under the deal, InssTek will supply metal 3-D printers worth US$2.3 million to the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia.
The university will receive customized MX Grande products that can produce a large metal structure with a dimension of up to 4 meters-by-1 meter-by 1 meter.
Earlier this year, InssTek inked a US$1.2 million export deal of the printers with University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany.
InssTek, headquartered in Daejeon, is one of the handful companies globally that commercialize metal 3-D printers using directed energy deposition technology, which can produce metal products of various shapes.
Sun married Chung’s eldest daughter Chung Sung-yi, an adviser for Innocean Worldwide, an ad agency under the Korean auto giant, in 1985.
Sun, an orthopedic specialist, is the chairman of Sun Medical Center in Daejeon. He also heads Corentec, an artificial-joint implant developer, which he established in 2000. Corentec acquired Insstek in 2014.
