[THE INVESTOR] LG Electronics has recalled nearly 500,000 units of portable air conditioners, worth more than US$125 million, in the US and Canada due to the risk of overheating and fire, according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The consumer product safety agency said the South Korean tech giant had received four reports of fires that had caused US$380,000 in property damage.
The recall involves three portable AC models, including those with model numbers LP0711WNR, LP0813WNR, and LP0814WNR.
The agency recommended consumers to stop using the recalled ACs and contact the electronics maker to schedule a free repair at an authorized service center.
The LG products were sold at retail chains and stores, including Home Depot, from February 2011 through August 2016 for between $250 and $280 per unit.
The Korean firm recalled more than 160,000 microwave ovens and 20,000 dryers in the North American region in 2012 due to fire hazard.
