[THE INVESTOR] Hyundai Motor Group Vice Chairman Chung Eui-sun said the automaker has a long way to go in the advancement of autonomous cars.

“Riding in the driverless car was nice and comfortable,” Chung told reporters at the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Jan. 5. “But there is still a long way to go.”

Chung successfully took a test ride of the autonomous version of Hyundai’s Ioniq sedan on the streets of Las Vegas the previous day, as part of the automaker’s effort to promote its driverless, green and connected vehicles at the world’s largest trade show. The car fulfilled “level 4” autonomy, which means it can drive by itself without human help, except in a few environments such as severe weather.

At the press conference during the CES, Chung said more than 14 new green vehicles models will be launched by 2020, including five hybrid models, four plug-in hybrids, four electric cars and one fuel cell electric vehicle. He also said the automaker is planning to unveil an autonomous concept car soon and is focusing on developing self-driving technologies to be more affordable to reach more consumers.
