[THE INVESTOR] More than half of the country’s top 100 firms reduced their workforce last year, data showed on Jan. 17.
According to industry data, 51 of the country’s top 100 companies by revenue reduced their workforce last year. The top 100 firms had 854,466 people on their payroll at the end of September, down 0.8 percent or 7,132 people compared to the same month 2015.
Much of the fall is thought to have been brought on by the shipbuilding industry’s difficulties.
Hyundai Heavy Industries’ payroll was reduced by more than 3,300 people, while
Samsung Heavy Industries and
Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering each cut their workforce by 2,356 and 1,147 employees.
