[ET NEWS] Samsung Electronics and SK hynix will adopt the world’s first spray-type electromagnetic interference, or EMI shielding technology, for their respective chip production lines from June, industry sources said on April 5.
Apple has started applying the EMI shielding technology that blocks off electromagnetic waves to the iPhone 7. But chipmakers have thus far outsourced the process, paying high costs.

Sources say the two Korean chipmakers will integrate the process into their production lines from June. Currently, they are carrying out pilot productions.

Especially their spray coating technology -- the first of its kind -- boasts more efficiency in investments and production costs compared to the conventional film type.

“Despite technical difficulties, especially for the material development, both firms have completed the technology for mass production,” a source said on condition of anonymity. “They will be able to supply NAND chips to Apple without outsourcing the process.”

Sources say now the key issue is Apple’s quality tests. Depending on the results, the two firms will be able to apply the technology for the chips used in the upcoming iPhone likely to be launched in September.

Apple is the sole smartphone maker that applies the EMI shielding technology for individual chips for the iPhone 7. The technology decreases electromagnetic interference in key chips, while increasing the device’s performance overall.

Industry watchers say other major smartphone makers like Samsung Electronics and Huawei are also likely to ask chip suppliers to adopt the technology for their next flagship phones.
