[THE INVESTOR] The Transport Ministry on May 2 said it will fine Scania Korea 341 million won (US$302,252) for installing the axle lift controlling device inside the truck, which could raise safety concerns.
The local unit of the Swedish truck maker is recalling a combined 2,226 tractors and trucks manufactured from June 16, 2009 to Feb. 1, 2017, that are equipped with the device.
Many large trucks have axle lift control system that allows the driver to lower the auxiliary wheel when overloading the truck, to minimize damage to the tires.
Scania Korea broke the safety rule as its manual controlling device was installed at the driver’s seat, instead of around the truck exterior as stipulated in the regulation.
If the device, however, is automatic and the axles can move automatically depending on the cargo weight, it can be installed inside the truck unit.
Scania Korea said it will upgrade the software of the trucks to add the automatic feature at its service centers across the country starting May 2.
