[THE INVESTOR] Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors have sold more than 500,000 hybrid vehicles in May, the companies said on June 5.

Hyundai and Kia, which together form the world’s fifth-biggest carmaker by sales, began to sell hybrid vehicles in 2009, and their cumulative hybrid car sales marked 514,759 units as of the end of May, according to data from the companies.

In May, the two Korean carmakers sold a combined 18,652 hybrid vehicles, including 5,284 domestic sales, in global markets. The models include the Sonata and Ioniq hybrid of Hyundai, and the Niro and K5 hybrid of Kia, the data said.

As the government moves to adopt strict regulations on diesel-powered vehicles to reduce fine dust emissions, they plan to strengthen their hybrid car lineups with more performance but fuel-efficient models.
