[THE INVESTOR] Samsung Electronics announced on Oct. 26 that it will support seven startups in the second half of the year through its in-house venture program C-Lab.

C-Lab, short for Creative Lab, is a program that allows employees with business ideas to devote themselves to their commercialization. Including these seven startups, C-Lab has been responsible for the launch of 32 startups since 2012 working in health care, VR and AR, and the Internet of Things. In addition, with the company’s support, 25 employees will leave Samsung at the end of this month to start their businesses.

“C-Lab is becoming a new source of innovation for domestic startups. Based on the experience accumulated so far, the company will further develop the program,” said Lee Jae-il, director of creative development at Samsung Electronics.

The Samsung-backed independent startups will showcase their businesses in various fields such as virtual reality, health care, and e-commerce.
The seven startups include: Hyperity, an application that allows users to control smartphones and computers through virtual screens; a portable air purifier BlueFeel; Defind, a smart shoe fitting service that generates a 3-D scan of your feet; Soft Launch, a social-media based recommendation service that utilizes big data to weed out false advertisements for restaurants and shops; PixelRo, a smartphone-based solution pairing an app and a screen add-on so users can see clearly without wearing corrective eyeglasses; 1Drop, a low-cost blood glucose measuring app that uses a smartphone’s LED light and camera; and Linkface, a VR application that allows direct control of contents that can track eye and facial movements.
