[THE INVESTOR] Renault Samsung Motors said on Jan. 2 its December sales fell 19 percent from a year earlier on weak domestic sales.

The carmaker sold 26,515 vehicles last month, down from 25,759 units a year ago, Renault Samsung said in a statement.

Domestic sales plunged 29 percent to 9,953 units from 14,078.

Exports also declined 11 percent to 16,562 autos from 18,539, it said.

An economic slowdown and lower demand for vehicles in global markets had an impact on the carmaker‘s monthly sales.

For the whole of 2017, the company sold a combined 276,808 units, up 7.6 percent from 257,345 units tallied in the previous year. The increase was helped by robust exports of the SM6 midsize sedan and the QM6 SUV, the statement said.
