[THE INVESTOR] Korean display firm LG Display has most likely completed turning a plasma display module line at its plant in Nanjing, China, into one for making LCD modules, according to industry sources on March 30.

This line is expected to be activated as early as the second quarter of the year after a series of pilot tests.

The display business arm of LG Group currently runs three LCD module plants -- N1, N2, and N3 -- in the region, churning out 50 million units per year. With the fourth N4 LCD plant, LGD can pump it up by 2,000 units.

The display maker announced in December last year that it would transfer display manufacturing facilities worth 25 billion won (US$23.50 million) to its Nanjing office to beef up its LCD production capacity in China.

According to market watchers, while LG Display may switch to OLEDs in the long run, its mainstay is still LCD which accounts for around 90 percent of its revenue.

LGD declined to comment on the details of the Nanjing plant.

“Different from constructing a new plant from scratch, which cost around 1 trillion won, remodeling N4 may have required less investment since LGD utilized an existing plant,” an industry source was quoted by local newspaper Seoul Economic Daily as saying.
