[ET NEWS] China’s Xiaomi is launching its latest Hongmi Note 5 in Korea next month -- its first phone launch here amid lukewarm sales of Chinese smartphones.

According to industry sources on June 25, the firm has recently signed retail contracts with the nation’s top three telecom carriers for the upcoming launch. It is also the first time that a Chinese smartphone maker is selling phones through all three major telecom companies here. Thus far, they have sold phones in an exclusive partnership with one of the big three or through smaller online retailers.

“This is Xiaomi’s first official phone launch in Korea. SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus have decided to launch the Hongmi Note 5 after several months of gauging its marketability,” an official from a telecom company told ET News on condition of anonymity.

He added the Chinese tech giant aims to seek at least 5 percent market share in Korea.

The new phone launch comes amid growing demand for quality budget phones here. Xiaomi is also increasingly building brand awareness as it sells popular appliances like air purifiers and robot cleaners.

The Hongmi Note is a popular model globally, with the latest model 5 hitting the market early this year. Key features include a 6-inch full HD display, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 636 chipset, 64GB memory capacity, 12-megapixel and 5-megapixel dual rear camera and 20-megapixel front-facing camera and 4,000mAh battery capacity. The price tag is about 300,000 won (US$270).
