[THE INVESTOR] GM Korea said on Sept. 3 its August sales plunged 44 percent from a year earlier due to lower demand.

The carmaker sold 23,101 vehicles last month, down from 41,311 units a year earlier, as local and overseas demand weakened further, the company said in a statement.

Domestic sales fell 26 percent to 7,391 units last month from 10,004 a year ago. Exports declined 50 percent to 15,710 from 31,307 during the same period, it said.

Though GM Korea began to sell the US-made Equinox sport utility vehicle in June, the 1.6-liter diesel-powered Chevrolet Equinox didn’t help buoy sales in August.

In its broad self-rescue efforts, GM’s Korean unit plans to introduce 15 vehicles in the local market over the next five years.

In June, the company also launched the upgraded Chevy Spark minicar and picked the Traverse SUV as the next model to be added to its lineup.

From January to August, sales fell 15 percent to 306,533 vehicles from 361,716 a year earlier, the company said.
