Seoul shares rebound on institutional buying

[THE INVESTOR] Korean stocks bounced back on Oct. 19 as institutions bought blue chip stocks to offset foreign-led selling. The local currency strengthened against the US dollar.     

The benchmark KOSPI rose 7.95 points, or 0.37 percent, to close at 2,156.26. Trading volume was moderate at 343.65 million shares worth 4.72 trillion won (US$4.17 billion), with losers outnumbering gainers 418 to 396.

Institutions bought a net 187.68 billion won worth of local stocks, while foreigners and individuals offloaded a net 171.63 billion won and 16.58 billion won, respectively.

The Korean currency closed at 1,132.1 won against the US dollar, up 3.1 won from the previous session.
