[ET NEWS] Hyundai Motor Group is planning to develop its first dedicated platform for electric vehicles by 2021 in a major push into the EV segment, industry sources said on April 9.

The all-new platform will enable Hyundai to drastically increase the driving range of its upcoming EVs.

“We found a need to develop a platform exclusively for electric vehicle, as the EVs with a maximum driving range of 300 kilometers are on the rise,” a Hyundai official said. “The envisioned platform is being developed using new materials to reduce the weight, while maximizing battery efficiency, to enable driving farther with less energy in comparison to rivals.”

The auto giant has been speeding up its EV development to meet the increasing demand of long-range EVs.

Hyundai Motor and its smaller affiliate Kia Motors plan to roll out 28 green cars by 2020. Most of the cars, however, will be based on the existing platforms of their gasoline-powered models.
