[THE INVESTOR] Samsung Electronics has filed a U.S. patent application for a 360-degree panoramic camera and a virtual-reality headset under the respective names Galaxy 360 and Galaxy VR, industry and media reports have said, indicating that the tech giant may drop its previous Gear brand.

The Korean tech giant filed the application with the US Patent and Trademark Office earlier this month, industry insiders said.

The change suggests that Samsung Electronics could produce panoramic cameras and virtual-reality headsets as part of its Galaxy brand.

In August, Samsung Electronics named its new smart watch -- a follow-up model to Gear S3 -- the Galaxy watch and not the Gear S4 as some had speculated.

Samsung Electronics said the change is part of its efforts to raise awareness of its Galaxy brand.
