Finnish pioneer bets on deeper health insights despite higher price and monthly subscription
Finnish health technology company Oura is taking on Samsung Electronics in its home market, launching the Oura Ring 5 in South Korea on Aug. 25 with a higher price and a mandatory subscription.
The entry sets up a direct contest with Samsung’s Galaxy Ring in a market where smart rings have yet to achieve the mainstream appeal of smartwatches.
At a press conference in Seoul on Tuesday, Oura said it will expand its retail presence, customer support and marketing in Korea, which it views as important to its next phase of growth.
“Korea is one of the key strategic markets for us,” said George Abbott, Oura’s head of Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific.
He cited the country’s rapid adoption of new technology and strong interest in health, particularly sleep and stress management.
Oura arrives relatively late, after Samsung and other wearable makers have established a local presence. The company said it waited until it could fully localize its products, marketing and customer service, with the fifth-generation Ring 5 providing the right opportunity to enter.
Founded in Finland in 2013 and now headquartered in the US, Oura is considered a pioneer of the smart ring market. It has sold more than 5.5 million devices in over 45 countries.
Oura is betting that more than 12 years of experience in sleep and health tracking will help it compete with Samsung.
The Ring 5 tracks more than 50 health metrics covering sleep, physical activity, stress, readiness and women’s health. The Oura app turns the biometric data into personalized scores and recommendations.
The device is 6.09 millimeters wide and 2.27 mm thick. It is nearly 40 percent smaller than its predecessor but uses higher-powered LEDs and 12 signal pathways, according to Oura.
Made of titanium, the Ring 5 comes in six finishes — black, silver, gold, stealth, brushed silver and deep rose. It offers up to seven days of battery life, water resistance to 100 meters and an IP68 rating.
Oura also highlighted its compatibility with both Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android, giving it a broader potential user base than the Galaxy Ring.
Price may be Oura’s biggest challenge against Samsung.
The Ring 5 will start at 630,000 won ($447) for standard finishes and 780,000 won for premium versions. Full access to its analysis and personalized insights requires a membership costing 9,400 won per month.
Samsung’s Galaxy Ring, by contrast, does not charge a subscription fee for access to health data.
Asked whether the recurring fee could become a barrier in Korea, Abbott ruled out introducing a different model for the market.
“The short answer is no,” he said. “We’re not going to change our model for the Korean market because we believe in that model.”
Oura said more than 80 percent of paying members remain subscribed after one year, adding that much of the product’s value comes from the continuing analysis and guidance provided through its app.
The company has no immediate plans to establish its own Korean office. It will instead work through local agencies and partners.
